New Zealand Rifle Association Meeting.
BALLINGER BROS. TIE FOR THE BELT. W. BALLINGER WINS ON FIRING OFF. (Per Press Association.) TRENTiiAjr, March 20. In the afternoon the Volley firing match was fired, Wang-anui rfaivke's Hay and Taranaki winning with 427 ; Canterbury, second, 338 , Otago, 279. Sharp at three o'clock the fioai stage of the championship began, and as anticipated a great struggle ensued, Ballinger brothers eventually tieing for the belt, but in firing off W. Ballinger, with the magnificent score of 24 out of 25, beat his brother and secured the coveted trophy. The following is the result of the Championship at the final stage, 10 shots at 700 yds : — Cantain W. Ballinger, Petone R.C., £25 and gold medal given by Defence Minister 532 Vol A. Ballinger, Wellington Guards, silver star and £17 10s 532 Vol. Richardson, North Dun- i edin Rifles, silver star and £12 10s 526 Sub Lt. Kirk, Petone Navals, silver star and £8 ... ... 524 Sergt. Wakelin, Hon. Reserve Corps, Cliristchurch. silver star and £6 520 Vol. Windslade, Wanganui Rifles, £4 020 T. H. Head, Whangarei Rifle Club, £4 518 J. Ross, Waipukurau Rifle Club, £4 5H Sergt-Major Perry, Alexandria Cavalry.£4 511 Corpl, Hrown, A Flattery, £4 oil The Rifle Challenge Cup for the highest range score in tliis match was won by Corporal King, of the Uatnaru Garrison Band. In the final for the Championship Vol. Scott, of Feilding, finished 13th on the list with a score of 501, and Captain Flyger, also of Feilding, came 33rd with 482. "Wellington, March 20. '1 here was a la'-ge attendance of the public in the Drill Shed to-night when the prizes won at the Rifle Association Meeting were presented | to the successful competitors by the Mayoress of Wellington. In addressing the competitors, Major Sommerville said the shooting at the meeting had been so good that it was almost a record not only for the colonj, but also for the whole world. The winners were loudly applauded as they were handed their prizes. The two Bal lingers, Richardson, Doughty Kirk, Waklyn, Robinson, Parslow, and the two Victorians (Hawker and >tewart) being accorded an especially hearty ovation on the presentation. At the call of Major t'ommerville three hearty cheers were given for the champion (W. Ballinger) ana also for the ex-champion (Captain Smith.) Major Sommerville mentioned that the Premier would haye been very happy to be present at the presentation, but he was kept away by a prior engagement.
