In a " Leaflet for Farmers" on the bot fly, Professor Kirk remarks:— There seems little doubt that we have at least two, if not three, species of horse-bot in this colony, but that common in the North Island is undoubtly Gastrophilus equi, a comparison of New Zealand specimens with types received from England revealing no difference whatever. To the practical farmer, however, the specific variations are of small interest. A correspondent, writing to the Standard, says: — "In renaming Palmerston it is cssontial that the name chosen shall be one that will involve the least amount of confusion. The proposal to call it " Manawatu " is absurd, as this will lead !to the greatest confusion. For instance a letter addressed say " Thomas Snooks, Manawatu, New Zealand," would be apt to travel all over the county of Manawatu before reaching its destination. Why not re-namc Palmerston " Greenwich " or as your city is destined to bei come an important railway centre, why ! not call it " Swindon."
