.+ A KIDNAPPING CASE. BLOODTHIRSTY NATIVES. (Pei. 1 Press Association.) Thubsday Island. March 17. The Hon. J. Douglas, Resident Magistrate, leaves for Sadai Island, which is threatened with an attack by the famous Tongera. the head hunting tribe. The peaceful natives around Macassar River are in a state of great excitement at the approach of the dreaded tribe. Sickening accounts are to hand of their bloodthirsty doings. Brisbane, March 16. Counsel for the defence in the kidnapping case applied for a non-suit on the ground that Malayta Island is not in the British dominions, but the Court decided that although the Island was without the British dominions there was sufficient evi- . dence to warrant the case going before a jury, and disallowed counsel's objections. Mr Pierce, manager of the Murdock's Company, was fined LIOO for evading the duty on jewellery. This Day. The boy leper has been removed to the Lazarette. All books and other articles in the rooms of the school to which he had access have been destroyed and the rooms disinfected. i Melbourne, This Day. j The action of the Government in reducing the interest on Savings Bank, deposits is considerably checking the influx of money, and large amounts have been withdrawn.
