Death of the Governor of New South Wales.

(Per Press Association). Sydney, March 15. Sir Robert Duff died at a quarter to six. A consultation disclosed bis condition as most hopeless, and an operation waa decided on as tbe laat resort, and was performed by five doctors. A bulletin was issued in the afternoon stating that a multiple of abscesses was discovered on tbe liver, and the condition of the patient was very unfavorable. The operation was thoroughly successful, but the disease was too far advanced, and the sufferer too weak after an extended illness to permit it to be effective Sir Robert displayed great fortitude, but gradually grew weaker and became unconscious at three o'clock, and without rallying or regaining' his senses passed quietly away a few minutes before six. Only Lady Duff, Dr Piaschi, and the nurses were present, the children and other members of the family being absent at Mossvale. At one o'clook when it was seen that the case was hopeless, the aid-de-camp was despatched to bring them to Sydney. They started by special train but arrived too late. The Primate waß sent for at four o'clock by tbe dying Gov* ernor but he was never in a condition to listen to his administrations. There were innumerable callers at Government. House, including Premier Dibbs, General Haulton, and Cardinal Moran, but no one was admitted. Lady Duff, who was informed of her husband's true condition early in tbe day, is completed prostrated by the sudden blow. Later. The death of the Governor has caused a profound sensation. Reports were received from Hobart up to the period of his return to Sydney that had not led anyone to suppose his condition was dangerous. Telegrams of regret and condolence were received from all the Governors, Bishops, and many of tbe leading colonists. A public funeral will take place on Sunday, at the Waverley cemetery. Chief-Justice Darley will be sworn in as Lieutenant-Governor to-morrow. Sir R. Duff is the first Governor who has died in the colony. London. March 15. In the House or Commons Mr Buxton referred to the lamented deatd of Governor Duff, which he deplored as a very great loss to the public service.
