New Zealand Rifle Association Meeting.

O (Per Press Association.) Trentham, March 14. The New Zealand Rifle Association's annual competition opened this morning with the Nelson match, 200, 500, and 600 yards, which does sot count in the aggregate for the belt. The weather was foggy in the early morning, but at 8 a.m. it cleared, and it appeared as if the day would be perfect, but towards noon a high wind from the north-west sprang up and puzzled the riflemen, many of them " bursting up at the long range. Young Burns, of Karori, managed to keep well on and put up the fine score of 93 out of 104, notwithstanding that he missed a shot The camp is very quiet, and entries less than for years. There has been a good deal of grumbling at the catering, but this is usual at the opening of the meeting. Following are the leading prize takers in the Nelson match : —

Should time permit an effort will be made to finish the 500 yards (10 shots) of the Marlborough match, which ia the first to count for the belt. This Day. The Council this morning decided to reduce the prize money by £115, equal to about 13 per cent of the total. The principal reduction was in the Wellington match, from £'120 to £67, for which no money was subscribed locally. A high nor'-wester is blowing, rendering the shooting difficult. The Hawke's Bay match (10 shots), 500 and 600 yards, is proceeding. Following are the leading prize-takers : —Head, Wangarei, £6, 85; Wakelin, Christchurch Reserves, £4 10s, 83 ; W. Ballinger, Petone, £3 10s, 80; Hobbs, Hamilton, £3, 79 ;A. Ballinger, Wellington Guards, £3, 79 ; Okey, New Plymouth, 78, Newell, New Plymouth, 78, Brown, Auckland, 77, Avery, Pahiatua, 77, £2 each. Marlborough, 10 shots at 500 yards, will be taken this afternoon.
