Settling on the Land.
(Per Press Association^. Sydney, March 12. About thirty farmers are leaving for the north western districts to take up several thousand acres on the Kudeen estate near Culcairn, which are to be devoted to wheat growing on the halves system. The owners pay for clearing and find seed and receive aud return one half of the crops. The land is let for five years. Invercargill, March 12. At a meeting of the Land Board, the Chief Commissioner said that settlement was not progressing satisfactorily owing to selectors taking up too much land and not having the means to work. All some of them did was to place statutory improvements and allow the land to he idle, themselves seeking work in dffferent directions. The Board decided to recommend the Government to give power to forfeit part instead of the whole of the holdings in cases where selectors were in arrears, or did not comply with the statutory conditions.
