Fire Brigades' Conference.
o Per Press Association.) Hokitika, March 12. The Fire Brigades' Conference commenced sitting this morning, Captain Michel (President) being in the chair. About 60 officers and delegates were present and were formally welcomed by th© Mayor. A telegram was read from Superintendent Hughes (Auckland) contradicting the statement of the Premier that the Brigade allowed the Avondale Asylum to burn in order to save the hotel. — After a lengthy discussion, during which the Auckland district delegates supplied an explanation of the circumstances. Bobbins (Hawera) moved to the effect that it was the rule to treat public and private property alike aud that in the present instance no special distinction was made. — Smith (Christchurch) in seconding said the Cbristchurch brigade had saved eighty thousand pounds worth of Government property at one fire — The motion was carried. This Day. The Accident Assurance Association in connection with the Fire Brigade, sat last night. The balance-sheet flisclosed a credit brlance of £288. Offi&ers were elected as follows : — President, Lieut. Smith, Vice-Presidents Captains Leach and Bellringer, Engineer Pauling, Secretary Gilbert. The public social ta the Brigade's delegates last evening was a. great success. About 200 were present. There is fine weather for the acquatic picnic at Lake Mahinapua to-day. The Conference is now concluded.
