Ruapehu in Eruption.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, March 11. Mr Gray, Secretary of the Telegraph Department, to-night received a telegram from the postmaster at Lake Taupo, that this morning there was a tremendous ejection of steam from Ruapehu, the lake on the summit of the mountain having evidently been converted from cold water into a great solfatara. The wire states that since midday the mountain has been ejecting smoke and ashes. Ruapehu has never been so active before. The other crater of Tongariro (Ngaruahoe) is also active. At Campbelltown last night smoke could be plainly seen rising in dense volumes from Mt. Tongariro and occasionally an illumination as if from fire was also seen. If it had have been a dark night it would have been more noticeable but the moon was " at the full " and shining brightly.
