Mr Seid, in a condemnatory speech, said he recognised in the amendment a friend ■which might dimn their whole policy. It was designed to b om the interests of big land monopo lists and he declined to make it a party matter. The Customs revenue for last year was £2,238,000, an increase of £169,000 on the previous year. The expenses of the department were decreased by £10,000. The wife of Captain Mathison has instituted proceedings to recover the sum of £3000 damages for the loss of her husband by the foundering of the steamer Alert. In the Legislative Assemby, Mr "Wise's amendment to the Income Tax Bill, that a portion of the amount provided for land pnrchase from the Goverment only be assessed on the increased values in the purchase, was struck out by 53 to 34 votes. Adelaide, March 7. On the last voyage of the Gabo from West Australia she discovered a reef between Pollock's reef and the south east island Reherchs Archipelago, and which is not marked on the chart. Steps are being taken to properly locate the reef. Hobart, March 7. The Tainui {from London, via Capetown, arrived at 7.30 this morning and resumes her voyage to New Zealand at 3 p.m., making Wellington the first port of call. She has 30 passengers for Australia and 80 for New Zealand. Melbourne, March 8. The Government have announced that they intend to take active steps towards developing timber export. They are considering the advisability of the appointment of an expert to visit Europe and America to sesure markets.
