Difference of Opinion in the Cabinet.
The Auckland Star says : — Certain clauses in the speech delivered by the Hon. W. P. Reeves, Minister for Labour, at Christchurch, have excited considerable comment. They are supposed to indicate a serious divergence of opinion between the Premier and the gentleman who holds the portfolio of Labour and Education. If such a difference exists it will be the worse for Mr Reeves. There is no doubt that there is a source of weakness to the Ministry, while it is just as certain that the Premier is its backbone and chief source of strength. That the time has come when we must go at a slower pace in the enactment of such laws, the most thoughtful of working men believe, and they are entirely in sympathy with Mr Seddon in the matter. They understand, because it comes right home to them, what Mr Reeves does not seem to have grasped yet — that restrictive laws upon industry, necessary as they undoubtedly are, do not tend to increase the amount of employment offering, but to decrease it.
