Feilding Cycling Club's Sports.
A GREAT SUCCESS. The first cycling race meeting under the auspices of the Feilding Cycling Club was held on the Oval yesterday afternoon and proved a much greater success than its most sanguine supporters ever anticipated. The Club has only been formed about four months, but its members, foremo3t amongst whom are Messrs E. 11. Fisher and E. H. Ricketts have been very energetic in pushing forward one of the most healthy and interesting of our out-door amusements. As a proof of the interest created in this practically new sport on this coast about 1300 adults and children were present, including a fair number from Palmerston. Shortly after one o'clock a procession of cyclists was formed opposite the Feilding Hotel, and, headed by the band, which played the familiar air " The old folks at Home " and after this " Vivandier," proceeded to the Oval. Thirteen members of the Palmerston Club followed immediately after the band, and then came fifteen Feildiug Club riders and several riders from outside Clubs brought up the rear, making in all about thirty-five cyclists in the procession. In addition to the Palmerston Club members mentioned a number of others came up by the special train at two o'clock. The first race was started well up to time and the remainder were also got off promptly by the starter, Mr Ricketts, who acted as director of the sports and worked hard to make them popular. Mr Fisher, the Secretary, was also very attentive to his duty. The various other offices were filled as follows : — Judges — Messrs W. A. Sandilands, E. Mills, A. C. Matheson ; lap-tak-ers — Messrs O . Cooper , H. L. Sherwill, W. Halcombe, A. R. Allan ; clerks of course —Messrs Andrew, Milson, Belfit; timekeepers — Messrs G. W. Fowles and J. Scott ; telegraph board, Mr W. Davy ; treasurer, Mr F. Mackenzie. The handicappers, Messrs E. H. Ricketts (Feilding) and R. Essex (Palmerston) succeeded admirably in handicapping as they had a number of untried and young riders to deal with. Barker, of Christchurch, is a phenomenal rider and had to be penalised in the five-mile, onemile, and three-mile events, but he won each of these with the exception of the five-miles event, which fell to Mingins, this wiu being a very popular one and he was carried shoulder high off the ground by the club members. R. P. Clarkson rode very gamely, but want of condition told at the end of the races. He declined to take advantage of the starts given him by the handicappers, preferring to race from scratch. In the Maiden race Giorgi had the misfortune to run into the fence and injure his machine. Parr was also unfortunate in running into a hurdle in the Novel race. A few drops of rain commenced to fall about 4.30 making the track slippery, and in the three-mile and Consolation races Mingins and Smith each lost their chances in those races respectively through their machines slipping from under them while they were in good positions. The Cycling Club members are very grateful to the Feilding Athletic Sports Committee for the use of their materials and also to several of their experienced members for the assistance rendered especially Messrs H. L. Sherwill, A. C. Matheson, O. Cooper, T. H. James, E. Mills, H. W. Davy, W. A. L. Bailey, J. Scott, W. Haloombe, and M. Belfit. The Feilding Brass Band, under Mr R. F. Haybittle, as conductor, kindly gave their services gratuitously and materially assisted in enlivening the proceedings.
