The Bible in School Question.

(Per Press Association.) Dunedin, Feb. 14. At the Congregational Union Conference this afternoon the Rev. J. Baxer moved a resolution in favor of introducing a Bible lesson in public schools. An animated discussion followed, most of the speakers strongly opposing th« motion. Ultimately an amendment by R. J. Burgess, was carried by an overwhelming majority, only four votes being given against it. The atnendmeut was, That it is neither the duty nor the riglt of the State to teach or control religion, and that in view of the open desires and covert attempt to establish denominational education it is not desirable to alter the present system.
