(Per Press Association). Wellington, Feb. 9. Steady rain has fallen all day, which which will benefit the farmers in bringing on the winter food. Almost all the crops are in. The Union Co, have been informed that the damage to the Oreti, stranded on the Wanganui bar, is not so serious as at first reported. The rudder post and some small gear aft has been carried away but the vessel is all right. The Porirua Asylum is already full and further accommodation is being urgently needed. The question of adding a new wing is to be considered next session. The fifty- mile championship road race under the auspices of the Wellington Cycling Club, was won by F. Fabian in 2 hours 56 minutes. Herbert Smith finished second, two seconds behind the winner. Auckland, February 9. This afternoon is very generally observed as the half-holiday. The exemptions are found to be much fewer than was anticipated, in consequence of Mr Carew's decision, and the combination of other businesses with those exempted. The amusements included a monster picnic. .
