The Half-Holiday.

I Per Press Association. 1 Auckland, February 8. The shopkeepers opposed to Saturday as the half-holiday have decided to close to-morrow pending the decision of the Supreme Court in the test case. Subscriptions are coming in freely for defraying the cost of legal proceedings. To-night was the late night for shopping instead of Saturday The shops were all lit up, but traffic was not nearly po large as was anticipated. Dunedin, February 8. A test case was heard at the Magistrate's Court as to whether fruiterers could claim exemption from closing under the Act if in addition seeds, vegetables, and plants were sold. Mr Carew, S. M., said that the defendant (James Pryon by combining the sale of either vegetables or seeds with that of fruit kept himself out of the exception in section 20 of the Act. He was convicted and f\ned Is with costs. Charles Henry Nicholls was fined Is and costs 17s 6d for not closing his shop on the half-holiday. He was under the impression that as the shop was kept by himself and his wife he was not required to close. Two Chinamen were also fined under the Aot.
