I From Our Own Correspondent j We Lave had a great deal of wet weather lately, which has interfered with shearing, but on the whole it will be productive of much good. Previous to the rain setting in we had a long spell of fine weather ; there were bush fires, and the place for days was enveloped in smoke. Lately there has been much dissatisfactiou among the dairy farmers about the tests of milk. It has been the same in Auckland, where a strong agitation was got up against the instrument, and the Government were asked to send an expert analyst. This the Government declined to do, but recommended them to have their milk analysed privately. One settler did this, and the result has been astonishing. The milk analysed by Mr Pond gave 4*47 of butter fat, the same milk at the factory gave 3-4 per cent. The fact seems to be that a thoroughly reliable, and yet simple, tester has yet to be invented. The theory that too much butter fat escaped into the milk passed through the separator is proved by a report I saw in the Star ; as to the appearance of certain calves '. which had been fed on the factory skim milk only.
