Consecration of the Bishop of Wellington.

(Per Press Association). Wellington, January 25. The ceremony of tho consecration of Dr. Wallis, the new Bishop of Wellington, took place this morning at St. Paul's Church. Admission was by ticket only, and the building was crowded. A choir picked from those of the three principal Anglican Churches executed the choral i portion of the service. At 10.30 a pro- , cession of bishops and clergy, numbering i 59 entered the church. The former j included the Bishops of Salisbury, Auck- ! land, Waiapu, Cliristchurch, Nelson, Dunediu, Melanesia, and the Bishop elect. Among the latter were a number of native clergy. Bishop Julius conducted the communion service and the Bishop of Salisbury preached. His discourse was principally devoted to sketching the Christian ideal of a leader of the church with references to the Apostles, and especially St. Paul. His Grace warned his hearers and the candidate that the besetting sin of the AngloSaxon race was devotion to material comfort. In New Zealand he feared that owing to its isolation and the favorable conditions of life the propensity was likely to be accentuated rather than diminished. The Bishop, therefore, must have something of the Christian warrior in him and bo prepared to combat this tendency. He concluded by commending Dr. Wallis to their pra3'ers, saying that from what he knew of him personally he believed he would worthily fill the post to which he has been chosen. An anthum was sung while Dr. "Wallis put ou his rochet and he was then presented to the Acting-Primate and the authority for his consecration was read by Mr Quick, Chancellor of the Diocese. The ceremony thereafter followed the ritual prescribed for such occasions, with full choral effects, the final act being the laying-on of hands by all the Bishops present. The service lasted till 1 o'clock. [The formal installation of the new Bishop takes place this morniugi .
