The Reported Deficit in the Revenue.

(Per Press Association) Wellington. January 25. At the close of the public meeting "in the Skating Rink to-night, Mr Reeves took the opportunity of referring to a cable appearing in the evening papers stating that a cable published in Loudon announcing the estimated deficit of a quarter of a million in the New Zealand revenue had occasioned surprise and uneasiness in the city. He said it was only right that ho, as the first Minister speaking in pubhc after the appearance of that message, should tpke the opportunity of emphatically denying — firstly, that - there were any grounds for supposing that there would bd a deficit of a quarter of a million or any other sum, and, secondly, tbat there wras any apprehension in New Zealand that tbere would be a deficit of any kind. It was surprising to them that men jr* responsible positions should send reckless gossip of Conservative newspapers to London as facts. There was absolutely no reason whatever for expecting there wonld be any deficit whatever. It was most unfortunate and deplorable that a party spirit should so seize hold of editors and lead them to play docks and drakes with tb.6 fiuaucea of the colony in order to fiud material for abusive leading articles.
