The Sad Bathing Fatality.

LATER PARTICULARS. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, January 25. The following additional particulars of the bathing accident on the West Coast, opposite Aratapu, have been received :•— A number of Wairoa residents were camped on the Coast holiday-making. A lagoon iv which 16 of the number were bathing became like a whirlpool. When tbe tide rushed in a wash from the break* ers assisted to carry tbe swimmers seawards. Guerrinsr, the schoolmaster ae* sisted several ashore. A large number of people standing on the beach witnessed tbe accident and were powerless to help tbe unfortunate people owing to their inability to swim. The body of Miss Bessie Scott was secured quickly, but all efforts to effect restoration of life proved unavailing. Miss Evelyn Hogg's body was found half a mile further along the beach. Miss Anaie Woollam's body has not yet been recovered. Mrs Hope and Florry Jones had a narrow escape from sharing a similar fate. Mnch sympathy is felt throughout tbe district. The flags oj all the vessels and of the buildings are half mast. Miss Hogg was one of the young daughters of Mr VV. Hogg, grocer, Newmarket. She was on a visit to her aunt, who is lfving at Aratapu, and was accompanied by her mother.
