HALCOMBE SPORTS.

The Halcombe Sports were held yesterday on the recreation ground in the presence of about 500 people. The racing was very good and the finishes close, but, unfortunately, several protests were entered. Hall and Burgess were protested against in the mile for sending in alleged incorrect performances and Carell was protested against in the 440 Yards Handicap for the same reason. Carell, who won the 100 Yards, Halcombe Cup Handicap events (440, 150, and 220 Yards) and 220 hurdles, refused to sign a declaration to the effect that his entry form was correct, he having entered as a maiden runner, and was disqualified by the committee. The protests against Hall and Burgess have not yet been decided. Wilson thus won the Halcombe Cup, he having secured two seconds and a third place to CarelL The officials all worked hard to make the gathering pleasant and successful. Mr A. C. Burcham, assisted by Mr Bradbury, performed the arduous duties of secretary in an efficient manner. Mr Heappey was very successful as starter and Messrs W. H. Hartgill and H. L. Sherwill acted as judges, while Mr J. Mt Scott acted as timekeeper. Various other officials, amongst them being Messrs L. Mitchell, T. Strawbridge, Lechner, Lampp, Williamson, Purkiss, S. White, were attentive to their duties. The Cup presented to the winner of the Halcombe Handicap was a very handsome one and was purchased through Mr Jas. Scott, of Feilding.
