Floods in Australia.
(PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION!. Brisbane, January 21. Heavy rains have fallen here and in surrounding country. Six inches fell in the last two days. No serious effects, however, are anticipated. |This Day. The water has abated in the lowlying parts, and no serious damage is now anticipated. Sydney, January 21. It has been raining for a week past, the downpour at times being particularly heavy. The northern rivers have overflowed their banks, and the country between Kempsey and Port Macquarie is under water. At the former place five inches of rain, and at the latter ten inches, have fallen since Friday last. Owing to the floods beyond Newcastle, railway communication with Queensland is interrupted. Heavy easterly gales are raging along the coast, and are accompanied by exceptionally heavy rain. It is feared in the Newcastle district that there will be a repetition of the floods of 1893. Boats are being prepared iv expectation of heavy floods. Most of the farms in the West Maitland district are already inundated.
