James Bird, a laborer, committed suicido by hanging himself to the cross beam of a water closet. He leaves a wife and a grown up family. At the inquest a verdict was returned that deceased committed suicide while temporal*!! >' insane. Wellington, January 17 At the Primitive Methodist Conference to day. the following connexional statistics were given : — Minister?, 30 : local preachers, 128 ; class leaders, 45 ; church members, 1466 ; Sabbath schools, 60; teachers 508 ; scholars, 4421 , churches, 52. The value of the property was stated to be £30,31*2 an increase of i.'184-l for tbe year. After further routine business the Conference closed. Chuistohurch, January 18 The Rawhiti Assembly of the Knights of Labor carried a motion urging the Minister of Lands to put the compulsory clauses of the Land for Settlement Act into operation, if necessary at an early date so that the labor market may be re lieved before tbe winter sets in.
