The Daily Telegraph, which bas advocated the Zone Byetem on the railways for many years, regards tho introduction of the Zone system in New Zealand for the carriage of fruit as premature. The Directors of the Australian Joint Stock Bank have decided to prepay onehalf ot the amount due to depositors in 1897 provided the payment of the other half is postponed till 1902, and it is extended to bear the same rate of interest as at present. At the hearing of the alleged " jumping " of claims at Waj'along the "jumpers" failed to appear and the cases were decided against them with costs. The claim holders, however, are cenverting their holdings into a mining lease, in order to secure complete protection. Mklbourni., This Day. Lord Brassey, the new Governor, is expected to arrive in the colony in September. Greeners, a firm of gun manufacturers in England, has issued a writ against a local firm of gun makers, claiming .£IO,OOO damages for the alleged illegal use of their name. The Bank of Victoria has declared a dividend of 5 per cent, for the half year on the annual preference shares and 2J- per cent, on ordinary shares, and carried forward i'7oo. In the Legislative Assembly, Mr "W. A. Trenwith. one of the labor members, moved that in order to prevent sweating in connection with Government contracts in was the duty of the Government to prescribe a minimum wage, and state it in the contracts. The motion was accepted by Government and carried without dissent.
