Advances to Settlers.
OVER i'SOO,OUO APPLIED FOR. The tirst naeetiug of the General Lending Board under the Government'Aclvances to Settlers Act was, put off from yesterday until to-day. If the SolicitorGeneral is present the only member of the bof>.Y(V absent will be the SurveyorGeneral, who has gone to Auckland. Over 600 applicants are now recorded, and the agregate amount of advances applied for is upwards of half a million sterling. The stated value of the security offered is fully three-fold that of the amount for which application is made. The business at to-day's sitting will be to appoint local valuers and to order valuations in those cases which the superintendent has marked for favourable consideration. As soon as the valuations begin to come in the Board will sit to deal with the applications. It is expected that the valuations of the securities offered by applicants in this district will be to hand within about ten days, but three weeks will probably elapse before the valuations from the remoter districts can be expected to arrive. — N.Z Times.
