ENGLISHMEN IN AUSTRALIA.
(Per Press Association) Adelaide, Jnnunry 14. The weather to-day was fiuc and the sky overcast with a cool breeze. Both Gregory and Iredale got m some fast work and with the score at 42 Iredale gave Peel a hot return which he failed to hold. Lockwood at this time was temporarily disabled, through au injured fiuger. Frequent changes were made in the bowling but it was not loug before the little Sydney man|played one into his wicket. Harry followed but was not at the wickets for more than a few minutes, and with the score at 255 Richardson found a weak spot in his defence, and with a fast yorker caused his retirement. Worrall then came on to assist Iredale, but after getting into double figures, gave Peel an easy one at ruid-off. Jarvis joined Ireland who finished his century off the last ball of au over from Brockwell. Richardson now handed the leather to Peel and the change brought about the downfall of Jarvis' wicket. After lunch Brockwell opened to Iredale, and the Sydneyite sent him to the fence for a quartette. The third century was brought up by Iredale, amid cheers. Trott was batting with great confidence, while Iredale was taking things easily. Peel was keeping down the score and sent in four successive maidens, but Lockwood, who was being no-balled, was replaced by Briggs. Iredale by a bad stroke sent a ball back to the bowler, and retired amidst the greatest ovation} ever heard on the Oval. Calloway joined Trott and some lively hitting ensued. Calloway showed some excellent defence, and managed to give his comrade sufficient time )to raise his score from 25 to 72, when he fell to one of Richardson's fast ones, the innings closing for 411 runs, which left the Englishmen 526 to get to win. His defensive play was of the soundest possible description, and as he got set he did some splendidly timed hitting. Most of his 17 fours were results of perfect late cuts. On returning toj the pavillion ho received a great ovation, the people rising and cheering him loudly. A. Trott's score occupied 90 miuutes in compilation, and his display was even more brilliant than Bruce's. Cleaner or harder driving than Trott's has seldom been seen in Adelaide. His total includes 11 fours. Until towards the finish the fielding of the Englishmen was first-class. Trott's fast bowling, which beat Ward, broke off the stump. Ward played an hour for his score of 13. London, January 14. A match has been arranged next seasou as testimonial to W. W. Read, the well-known Surrey amateur, between Stoddart's team and the best of England, instead of England v. Surrey, as at first contemplated.
