Local and General News. While cleaning a schnapper, a man up North found a half sovereign of 1845. Mr Robert Louden, of Sydney, N.S.W., formerly in business here, was a visitor to Feilding to-day. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board commences this evening. The Hon J. McKenzie was a passenger yesterday by the Penguin from the South. Captain Edwin wiied at 12.25 p.m. to-day : Strong N E to N and W winds, glass fall. The Premier left Greymouth for Reefton on Friday afternoon, and he is expected to arrive at Wellington to-day from Westport. It is said by the Persiaus that plums contain an essence which affords relief to persons who suffer from muscular cramps or rheumatism in a mild form. Mr W. J. Palmer, the Government pomologist, was on a visit to Palmerston on Saturday for the purpose of inquiring into the capabilities of the district for fruit growing. News has been received that the Port Darwin telegraph line is iuterrupted. Owing to this intern ptiou our budget of Home and foreign cable news in to day's issue is limited. Says the Post : — It is rumoured that Mr William Woods, blacksmith, of Palmerston North, is to succeed Mr Pirani, M.H.R., as a member of the Wellington Land Board. On Saturday morning a lad of about 18, named Robson, employed in Meters Car michael and Son's workshops, Wellington, accidentally had three fingers severed in a planing machine. The weekly half-holiday ! Foxton, Tuesday; Feilding, Wednesday; Wanganui, Thursday ; Palmerstou, Saturday. It is possible for considerable diversity of opinion to be found in even the small radius of 50 miles. Mr Park, the Mayor of Palraerston North, was a visitor to Feilding on Saturday. He interviewed the Mayor, Mr Sandilands, and several of the business people in connection with the weekly half -holiday question. He found the general opinion of the employers was favorable to Wednesday. In reply to a number of enquiries, we (Standard) have been requested to state that Mr Fred Pirani has not yet been asked by the Government to accept a further term of office on the Wellington Land Board, on which his membership expires this week, nor has he intimated his wish to be relieved from the duties attached to the position. It was notified afc the lasfc meeting ot the Halcombe Athletic Sports Committee that Mr Cornfoot would be unable to act as judge at the forthcoming sports, and it was unanimously resolved that Mr Hartgill be requested to till the position. Mr Hartgill is an expert in athletic affairs, and is well-known to the majority of athletes as starter at the Feilding Athletic Sports, and he should fill the position admirably. The jockey, George Johnston, who was so seriously injured at the Manawatu races on Boxing Day, and who has since been under the careful treatment of the hospital authorities, on Saturday showed decided signs of progress towards recovery. The boy, Harry Pritchard, who was severely kicked in the face by a horse at Tokomaru on the 4th of January, and subsequently admitted to the hospital, has only just recovered consciousness.— Standard. Statements having been circulated that deceased germs lurked in the wood blocking of the Sydney streets, the Wellington corporation has obtained a report of a bacteriologist on the subject. Portions of the blocking eleven years old were examined. Both the material and the moisture found underneath it were placed under a searching analysis, but no pathogenic germs were found, and a ' special search revealed not the slightest trace of typhoid bacillus. The Paris Gaulois has been inviting opinions on the corset question, and has not succeeded in throwing much new light thereon. "Gyp" says "It spoils a pretty figure, and does not improve a bad one." Mdme. Jane Hading : " It's a hand of iron under a velvet glove.'' Mdme. Rejene : " French women have too good figures in these days to need any support." Mdme. Judic's answer has a touch of originality. She says : " The bother of putting it on in the morning is compensated for by the pleasure of taking it off at night." A farmer on the Awahun road imported a windmill for the purpose of pumping water. It was erected in a suitable place and the machine worked beautifully, but it was more ornamental than useful because the pnrap would not draw water. Much thought was exercised and numerous experiments made — but the result was the same -no water. At last a well-known local practical engineer was consulted. He critically examined the whole affair, and theu with a quiet smile said " The windmill is good,' the pump is good, and everything is well fitted with the small exception that the pump has been fixed upside down." The change was effected and the farmer is happy. The Committee appointed to arrange the programme for the forthcoming bicycle races met on Friday last at the Club rooms. It was decided to hold the meeting on Wednesday aternoon, February 27th. The amount to be given in prize money is £24 ss, exclusive of trophies, of which several have been promised, It was decided to have a procession of cyclists through the town on the day of the races. The Secretary was instructed to arrange about selling the refreshment booth, and to write the Marton and Palmerston Cycling Clubs asking them to appoint handicappess. Members of the Club are reminded of the meeting to-night. Strict punctuality is requested.
