AUSTRALIAN CABLES.

TOBACCO CULTIVATION. CA'BLE GUARANTEE. VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT TO RESIGN. PEK FKESB ASSOCIATION). Sydney, January 9. Two enterprising Sydney merchants are entering upon an entensive tobacco venture in Fiji. They start operations this month, and intend giving tobacco culture an. exhaustive trial. The Government have not followed the example of Victoria in giving notice of the termination of the cable guarantee. The Premier thinks Victoria is merely providing against the contingencies and has given notice so that if she definitely resolves to withdraw the intimation may have been made within the time provided bv agreement. This Day. Tbe Postmaster-General says the cable from London, under date of the 7th, with regard to Victoria's action in giving notice to withdraw from the cable guarantee is misleading. There is au outcry in the country against the removal of the wheat duties, and in several centres the price has fallen to Is lOd. Melbourne, January 9. Some three years ago it was emphatically declared that nothing could be done to produce better results on the Victorian railways. Yet, since the retrenchment was asserted to be an impossibility, the cost of the workingof tbe railways has been reduced by .±'630,000 per annum. This Day. The Premier feelingly expressed his intention to resign, as the Labor Party had made the Government position intolerable. The Governor has returned to town, and the Government will communicate their decision to him to-day. Suggestive hints are thrown out that if the Government will renounce the Labor Party and abandon the Land Tax, they will receive fair support from a portion of the Opposition corner.
