Government to Purchase Manawatu Railway.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, This Day. Under the contract betweeu the Manawatu Railway Company and the Government, the latter now have the right to purchase the line and everything connected therewith on giving twelve months' notice. The price is to be ascertained by arbitrators in the usual way, and they have to be guided by the cost of the construction of similar lines at the time the railway was built ; allowance for depreciation is provided for aud to the sum thus fixed five per cent has to be added. All endowments are outside of the contract, and if the Government desire them, too, special arrangements must be made. The Company still holds over 100,000 acres of land, including the valuable reclamation at the station, part of which only goes with the buildings.
