*> (PEB PBESs ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, December 29 Mercantile people presented Mr Grant with a purse of 120 soys. The Colonial Treasurer, who made the presentation, explained that tho transference was caused by Government thinking one of the most experienced managers should have charge of tbe Auckland district as settlement is progressing apace in that district. Woodville, This Day. A petition is being got up here urging tbe Government to acquire the Hon. J. D. Ormond's property of three thousand five hundred acres for settlement. The present long spell of dry weather is unprecedented at this season and rain is badly wanted. Auckland, December 80. Mr John Pbillipps, of Phillipps and Son, painters, and Mr E. Bartley, architect, state that they remember Monkhouse, referred to in the Tichborne case as being in Auckland, perfectly well. He left Auckland about 1870. He was a scenic artist and decorator.
