Chess Tournament.

(Per Press Association) Wellington, December 30. Shortly after the luncheou adjournment yesterday Mr Edwards scored against Dr Hatherley. After a few moro moyes in the game between Messrs Cocks and Barnes a draw was agreed to, there appearing to be a small chance of a win on either side. Mr Mackay succeeded in breaking up Mr Wood's defence, and at 8 o'clock had secured a win, Mr Wood resigning on the 44th move. Mr Hookham pressed his advantage against Mr Pleasants, and shortly after 3 o'clock announced mate. The game between Messrs Gifford and Barraud was won by the former. Messrs Lelievre and Pleasants decided to }ilay their game set down for tlie 7th of January. The English opening was adopted. The game was even until the 20th move, when Mr Lelievre forced a series of exchauges, thereby gaining a slight advantage, which he steadily increased until the 65th move, when Mr Pleasants resigned. The scores to date are as follows : — Lelievre, 4 wins 1 los ; Mackay, 3 wins 1 loss ; Gifford, 3 wins 1 loss ; Barnes, 2k wins l-£ loss ; Cocks, 2$ wins 1£ loss ; Pleasants, 2£ wins 2£ loss ; Edwards, 2 j wins 1 loss ; Hookham, 2 wins 2 loss ; Wood, 2 wins 3 loss ; Hatherly, 1 win 3 loss ; Pearce, 5 losses. On Monday tlie games will be Hookham v. Barnes, Gifford v. Pleasants, Hatherley v. Mackay, Lelievre v. Cocks, and Edwards v. Barraud. This Day. Fifth Day.— Hookham v Barnes; at midday the game was fairly even. Barraud adopted a two knight's defence against Edwards, and has a winning advantage. Heatherly v McKay; a draw was agreed to. Gifford v Pleasants ; the Sicilian defence was adopted by tho latter, aud the game is quite eveu. Lolcvro v Cocks; the English opening was adopted, aud it looks as if the game will be drawn.
