Lady Canvassers.

Our contemporary, the Wanganui Herald, is seldom guilty of giving bad advice, but we think he has departed from the rule when he recommends people *who have been victimised by lady canvassers to put up a placard on their doors to the effect, " Any lady entering this office for the purpose of collecting money or selling tickets will be kissed." Why, we have seen lady canvassers in our time, and have experienced all the difficulty of saying "No " to them ; but we do say, with all honor and respect, that in no instance can we remember that " kissing " would have been punishment drill— quite the contrary, in fact. On one occasion in Hokitika, in " the good old days," in a bank where some twenty or thirty nice, good-looking young fellows were at work, they were all observed to suddenly disappear— to "take cover", in fact— under counters and desks. This was caused by the entrance of a quiet and very good-looking young girl with a subscription list. Only the poor teller was left to face the dreaded foe, and he timidly " anted up " a pound out of pure funk. He looked round to point out other victims, but, as we have said, they were invisible. Now, had the oscillatory process threatened by the Herald been in vogue then, that young woman wonld have gathered in twenty or thirty pounds instead of only one, and all parties to the contract would have been well satisfied. Our contemporary is getting old.
