The consumption of cigarettes in Victoria is stated on authority to bo 50,000,000 a year, in New South Wales 90,000,000, and New Zealand 40,000,000. At the Duuedin wool sales yesterday the prices showed a considerable falling off as compared with last season. Tho drop on fleece wool was about l^d per lb. It is rumoured that an action for JUOOO damages is about to bo entered by a well-known local solicitor against an equally well-known resident for slander. — Standard. On over-worked employe said to our reporter this morning, " I wish tho boss hadn't put iv that advertisement, I've been worked off my feet evor since." Fact. Some of the crops in the Campbelltown district will soou bo ready for harvesting. One crop of ono hundred aud fifty acres is to bo harvested next week. The late crops are suffering very much for the want of rain. In the year 1893 the interest on money deposited in the New Zealand [ Post Office Savings Bank amounted to L 114.760. The total amount to the credit of all accounts at 31st December of that year being L 3.241.996. At the Dunedin Mayoral installation Mr Fish said that if his conversion scheme proved a success ho saw his way to the proposed drainage scheme and tho establishment of a public library without entailing much additional taxation. The Manchester Rifles paraded last night for inspection. Captain Kirton and Lieut. Halcombo were in command. Sergt.-Major Macmillan having given somo preliminary instructions Lieut. Halcombe took chargo, and somo good work was done. The parades for January and February will bo duly anuounced immediately after their receipt from Lieut.-Col. Nowall, the officer commanding the district. The Hon. Lounou, Mr 11. Richardson drew with Mr Morey, Mr Skeruian drew with Mr Curtiss, Mr Wilbou beat Mr Humphries, Mr Eastbor drew with Mr Colßon, and Mr Armstrong lost to Mr Browu. After reaching a depth of five hundred and seyeuty feet, the boring for artesian water at Danevivke has been abandoned. Parr, wheelwright and coachbuilder, has just completed a very convenient four horse coach for Mr S. Daw, the pioneer coach proprietor, for use on the road between Birmingham and Rangiwahia. The coach is specially built for that road and looks a very serviceable vehicle. The body is painted dark green and wine color, with venuillion and amber linings, while the undercarriage is painted yellow, with black and maroon stripes. The coach is capable of seating fourteen passengers. The annual concert by children attending the Feildiug State School will be given in the Assembly Rooms this evening. Tho programme is a lengthy one, and tho items comprise songs, duets, action-songs, recitations, etc. The first part of the programme will be contributed entirely by children, aud the second part by such popular vocalists as Mrs Woollams, Miss Bellve, Mr Treseder, and Mr A. Eade. We feel confident tho hall will be crowded for the occasion.
