Annual Sheep Returns.
INCREASE OF 850,460 SHEEP. The annual sheep returns have just been completed by the Stock Department, aud show au increase of 850,460 sheep within the year ended 80th April last. The following are the particulars for the six stock districts of the colouj r : Auckland, 858,295 sheep; increase, 1325. Number of owners, 2296 ; increaso 118. Sheep rate, £ 858 ; increase, £1. Napier, 4,286,986 sheep; increaso, 176,309. Number of owners, 3565; increase, 133. Sheep rate, iM'2B7 ; increase, JEI77. Wellington West Coast, 4,024,071 sheep; increase, 306,357. Number of owners, 3,565 ; increase, 244. Sheep rate, i' 402 4; increase, 1*306. Totals for the North Island, 9,169,352 sheep ; increase, 483,991. Number of owners, 7220 ; increase, 495. Sheep rato, £9169 ; increase, £484. Marlborough-Nelsou, 887,582 sheep ; iucrease, 52,422, Number of owners, 1389; increase 57. Sheep rate, £888; increaso, £53. Canterbury Kaikoura, 5,744,668 sheep ; iucrease, 259,687. Number of owners, 8671; increase, 312. Sheep rate, L 574 5; increase, L 260. Otago, 4,429,227 sheep; increase, 54,860. Number of owners, 3557; increase, 194. Sheop rate, L 442 9; increase, L 54. Totals for the South Island, 11,061,477 sheep; increase, 366,469. Number of owners, 8617; increase, 563. Sheep rate, L 11.06 2; increase, L 367. Totals for the colony, 20,230.829 sheep; increase, 850,460. Number of owners, 15,837; increase, 1058. Sheep rate, L 20.23 1; increase LB5l. The detailed statistics for the several counties show an increase of sheep iv 49 counties and a decrease in 23 counties. Those which show tho largest increases are :— Orona (Wellington), 99,---698; Waitaki, 85,412; Geraldiue, 76,---212; Cook, 64,856; North Wairarapa, 53,563 ; Ashburtou, 53,115. The heaviest decreases are : — Vincent, 23,825 ; Cheviot, 15,230; Whakatane (Auckland), 11,023 ; Clutha, 8838; Taranaki, 8791 ; Taiori, 8277.
