We understand a petition is being signed at Awahuri against the proposed alteration in the time of arrival and departure of mails. Word was received in town to-day that W. Morrison, telegraphist, of Blenheim, died this morning. Morrison was well known in the athletic world, and as a high jumper he had few equals. A Feilding man paid a short visit to the Palmerston North District Hospital a few days ago, and was so delighted i with the management, the appointments, and the great care taken of the patients, that he exclaimed : " By Jove, it's worth while getting ill aftor all." We take it no greater complimout could be paid to this oxcellent institution. At the Mount Morgan mine, Victoria, a man named William Kirkwood, aged 32, while workiug a circular saw, deliberately laid himself on tho saw and let it sevor his head completely from his body, The deceased had behaved in a very eccentric manner for a day or two. He leaves a widow aud five childrcu. Mr G. H. Saywell has lately built to order two splendidly -designed dogcarts. One for a local townsman, which has a pateut reversible seat, and is the best thing of tho kind we have seen for vehicles, beiug very comfortable, easily adjusted, aud the trap is balanced iv a few seconds by a very simple process. Tho ironwork, woodwork, paint, trimmiugs, &c, arc of tbo best quality, and the whole turnout reflects great credit on Mr Saywell's establishment. The other vehicle is for Messrs Bosher Bros., of Makino. Tho painting is somewhat out of the common, the larger panels beiug staiued a dark mahogany color, with two panels of honeysuckle, which makes a very pleasiug and harmonious distinction], tbo lines beiug of gold leaf aud dark vermilion. The trimmings are of the best leather.
