The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY DEC. 19, 1894. THE SHOPS AND SHOP ASSISTANTS ACT, 1894.

Wiiatbvfk may have been the intentions of the framers of the Shops and Shop Assistants Act, 1894, their meaning is not always clear. Clause 18 provides " The closing hour of all offices shall not be later than five o'clock in the afternoon of each week day except Saturday, when the closing hour shall not be later than one o'clock iv the afternoon." In the Interpretation Clause " Office " means any building or place used as a banking office, insurance office, or for any other commercial purpose. As ho exception is made in the case of the post and telegraph offices, which if not entirely used for " banking, insurance, and commercial purposes" are used for little else, it may be contended that the Act applies in their case and they should therefore be closed on the afternoon of Saturday also. <'f course this is a debateable point which the authorities will no doubt settle.
