iPer Press Association,) Sydney, December 15. The first innings of the Australians closed for 586 Additional scores are ; — Gregory 2ul ; Blackham 74 ; Jones 11. Ward and McLaren were the first to do battle for tbe Englishmen against the bowling of Jones and Turner, and when the score was 14 McLaren sent an easy one to Reedman, which was accepted. Stoddart followed and the game proceeded very slowly, both men playing with the utmost caution, and runs were few and far between. With the score at 37. Jones handed the ball to Giffen, and when half a dozen runs were added Stoddurt tipped one of Giffen's to Jones. The Australians were at this time fielding splendidly. Brown joined Ward, and at the same time Trott succeeded Turner with the ball. The first hour's play only produced 50 runs, the bowiing being treated circunispectively. Later on, however, the batsman opened out, particularly Ward, who was credited with several boundary hits in quick succession. At 76 Turner relieved Trott, and a smart return by L3'ons sealed the fate of Brown, who was run out. Brock well was the next comer. The score was gradually raised 109 when McLoud replaced Turner, and Jones again went on, taking Giffen's end, but no separations were effected, when the stumps were drawn for the day. The scores are: — McLaren, c Reedman. b Turner, 4 ; Stoddnrt, c Jones, b Giffen, 12 : Brown, run out, 22 ; Ward, not out, 67 ; Brockwell, not out, 19. Total, three wickets for 124. Great enthusiasm was shown in the match, 30,000 peoplo being on the ground.
