FREETRADE AND PROTECTION IN; AMERICA. . TO THE BDITOR OF THE STAR. Sib,— The only observation 'which I think it necessary to make with reference to " Patriot's " letter, published in this evening's Star, is that it fully proves the correctness of the Freetrade doctrine that an excess of imports over exports is evidence of the wealth and prosperity of a country, as is instanced by his acknowledgement of the vast sums of money which England lends to foreign countries. " Patriot " completely completely ignores the proof I gave in my last letter of the wonderful increase in wealth and prosperity enjoyed by the English people under a Freetrade policy, and which has been my main object to point out in this correspondence. I was very pleased to see by a New York cablegram, published in Tuesday's Stab, that several leading manufacturers in the United States are contemplating the formation of a Freetrade League. Such a league if carried out with anything like the spirit of the Anti' Corn Law League in England, which became "a power in the State" as acknowledged by the London Times and other leading London journals, and led to the complete establishment of Freetrade iv that country, will not fail to free the American people from the grievances which they suffer under the yoke of Protection. I should not be at all sur* prised to see America the first country to follow in the footsteps of England by adopting a thorough Freetrade tariff as was foreshadowed by the Chairman of the United States Congress before the London Chamber of Commerce, to which I drew attention in my letter commencing this correspondence. I am, etc., Saml. Goodbehere. Feilding, December 18th, 1894.
