Seized by a Shark.
At Newcastle recently a young man, Dugald Hewison, had a narrow escape from a terrible death. In the morning, in company with a numbor of others, Hewisou was bathing in the breakers on the beach at the rear of tlie hospital and when about 50 yards from the shore he was seized by a shark. The latter had hold of Hewison's right arm and was pulling him under, when Hewison's brother Bertie, hearing the cries for help, proceeded to his assistance. He succeeded in beating the shark off, and with considerable difficulty managed to get his brother on to the beach. Reaching there, it was found that young Hewison's right arm had been torn off at the elbow by the shark, and his left arm had been frightfully lacerated. How he managed to escape is regarded as a miracle. Dr Beeston was on the beach at the time, and had the unfortunate man removed to tho hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate the limb. Hewison is now doing as well as can bo expected.
