The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, DEC. 11, 1894. A WATER SUPPLY.

Apropos of a water supply for Feilding a contemporary informs us that the Borough of Devon port, on the north shore of the beautiful Auckland harbor, has recently carried to a successful issue a water supply project. A well informed resident in that Borough wrote to the Wairarapa Times as follows : — " Devonport was very dull for several years, but, since the water supply, is going ahead fast. Houses are going up all round, and property generally has considerably inoreased in value." A roduction in fire insurance premiums followed on the establishment of the water works. The cost was £15,000 at 5J per cent with } per cent sinking fund. This included £5,810 for pipes and material ; £1,483 pumps, boilers and machinery ; sinking fund, first year, £900 ; Engineer, £600 ; land and buildings, £686 ; Inspector, £200. Tho special rate is fixed at ninepence in the pound, but it is expected to be reduced within five years to fourpence halfpenny. If this work was undertaken for Feilding where no expensive plant, or machinery would be required, the special rate need not exceed threepence in the pound. The charges to householders for the use of water at Devonport are as f-llows : — Ten shillings per annum on properties not exceeding £12 10s on the valuation roll. Five per cent on higher valuations up to £100, and 4 per cent above that limit. One half of these rates is charged to non-con-sumers situate within one hundred yards from the mains. Manufacturers and others by meter Is per 1000 gallons. Gardens 20s per annum. But these rates are in tbe main based on the limits prescribed in the Municipal Act, and are common to all towns enjoying a water supply.
