J Melbourne, November 28 While a dismal tale of decrease marks nearly every characteristic of commercial life in Victoria, the butter trade has vitality and capacity to expand which are altogether phenomenal. Every week shows an increase in the shipments to London, each carge topping the record of the present and all previous seasons ; but the cool chambers of the R.MS Ophir, which left on Saturday, were occupied by the largest consignment of dairy produce that has ever been carried by any steamer in any part of the world The accommodation reserved by the Agricultural Department on this vessel was for 566 tons, but there was space available for nearly 1000 tons, and within a few tons of that quantity was despatched, — Post
