Forty unemployed broko out iv riot at Kauieia, wrecked* a wiuc shop there because they wore refused drink, and brutally ill-treated two women and several Chinamen. A constable who interfered was knocked down, and drawing his revolvor fired on the mob. The ringleader was hit and seriously wounded. This cowed the rioters, several of whom wcro ultimately arrested. This Day. Hopkinson, one of the riotors who was shot, has had his leg amputated, and is in a critical condition. The ringloadeva have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment from 4 months downwards.
