New Zealand Timber in England.
The following appears in the Post :— Sir, — The importance of this information will, I triißt, ensure its circulation from end to end of the colony. Months ago it was known to the Government that the supply of wood from Norway and Sweden to England was failing owing to the destruction of timber, and it was shrewdly suspected tbat Russian merchants were striving to obtain the trade. The undersigned was sent immediately to London to open up the trade for New Zealand. Our Government sent samples and the Gothic brought a large quantity on my own account. Astonishment was everywhere expressed at the beauty of our woods, which are quite unknown to commerce. Incredulity was stamped on every face when it was mentioned that our people recklessly burnt such a noblo property ; and on every side the question was asked, "Where can I buy these woods ? " Articles were written in leading journals on this " unsuspected wealth in New Zealand," and specimens of our woods were exhibited in their windows. The Board of Trade returns for July are now just to hand and are most instructive. Norway and Sweden imports are ► 93,651. 10 ads less; Russia 6375 loads more. Meanwhile the finest market in the world is waiting with open arms for New Zealand timber, and every post brings letters from enquirers.- lam, &c, James Freyberg. Timber Expert for New Zealand. Westminster Chambers, London, S.W., 11th Sept., 1894.
