Yesterday Constable Watty arrested Win, Jeffries at Palmerston on a warrant from Wellington charging him with wife desertion. *■ The Captain of the local Fire Brigade yesterday received a union coupling for tho hose, thus enabling two jets of water to bo used when necessary in case of fire. A cricket match will bo played on November 9th (Princo of Wales' Birthday) on the local cricket ground between the Wanganui and Feilding Cricket Clubs. The names of the local team will appear iv to-morrow's issuo. The Salvation Army have decided to hold their picnic on the Prince of Wales' Birthday on the Oval, instead of in Mr Turner's paddock, as previously announced, so as to allow the polo players to occupy tho latter place. At a special meeting of the Pohaugiua County Council, to bo held on December Bth, 1894, it is proposed to confirm a Special Order adopting "The Local Bodies Loans Act, 1885," and " The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886," and amendments thereof. In our advertising columns, Mr Joseph Smith, on behalf of himself and his son-iu-law Mr R. Shcehy, returns thanks to tho officers aud members of the Feildiug Fire Brigade and the public who assisted them at tho fire on Saturday night. We understand a movement is on foot for starting a cheese factory at Apiti, and Mr Sawyers, the Government dairy expert, has consented to address a meeting there in r.bout two months. Mr Yicary has already made a move in the matter of cheese making, and has purchasod a plant for his own use. The Pohangiua County Couppil have decided to enforce clause 60 of the Rating Act, 1894, in which they aro em> powered to add ten per cent, on all rates which remain unpaid after six months from the date on which tho same first became recoverable. Rates unpaid by November 15th next will, with tho ten per cent, added, be sued for. The decision of the referee, the Hon. Scaly blight is beginning to appear on fruit trees, therefore spraying should be done at onco. At Campbelltown Mr J. Ruhvaldt has already grown a very fine sample of strawberries, ripe and of full flavour. We learn from the Examiner that Mr Haggen will contest tho Woodville mayoralty with Mr Taylor. There -will bo a big fight. The Manchester Rifles will hold a daylight parade ou Thursday next. The men will be inspected by Colonel Newall at 6.80 p.m. The parade will be dismissed at 8 o'clock. Mr J. Smith's house, which was destroyed by fire on Saturday last, was insured in the Commercial Union Oftico aud the furniture in tho Alliance, aud not vice versa as previously reported. Mr Hanneke, of Marton, was a passenger to Sydney by the North Goruiau liner Prince Regeut, and would not come on to New Zealand by the Wairarapa ! owiug to the vessel being overcrowded. We (Standard) understand that freezing operations will be resumed by the Lougburn Company about the beginning of next mouth. Owing to the backward season for fafc sheep it has been found impossible to mako an earlier start. Mr W. S. Short, chief clerk of the Land and Survey Department, has bcea appointed to lake the evidence of the local bodies as to how the cost of the erection of the Kimbollon road bridge should be apportioned. Tho enquiry will probably open on the 20th inst. at the Feilding Courthouse. Mr R. Cobb, the well-known sheepbreeder, Palmerston North, left Wellington for Lytteltou yesterday afternoon by the Rotorua with seven sheep which ho intends to exhibit at the agricultural show at Christchurch this week. Mr Cobb took both the ram and ewe with which he secured championships at the Palmerstou Show. The London correspondent of the Wellington Times writos : The monument which Mrs Ballanco intends to erect to tho memory of her late husband •in Now Zealand will bo shipped during the ensuing month by one of tho New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers--. The monument will, of course, be erected in Wellington.
