Manchester Road Board.

» The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held on Saturday last in the Board's office, there being present Messrs G. Wheeler (chairman pro tern), J. Purkiss, H. J. Booth, A. Conway and W. G. Pearce. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Alexander Bell, Halcombe, asking if the Board has taken any steps to have portion of road repaired passed his section which the Kiwitea had washed away. From Clerk Pahiatua County Council, asking for Board's statement of account of receipts and expenditure in connection with the Gorge road and tolls. From L. Laurenson, Stanway, complaining of the manner iv which tho Makara road is being kept in repair. From Martin Hart, Ashurst, asking Board to put mettle on road leading to his sections. From Commissioner Crown Lands, replying to Clerk's letter of 9th inst. re Government gravel reserve. From C. G. Esam, Marton, asking if Board had authorised Mr Sohwass to cut wires of dividing fence between Mr McCrea's freehold property and the Tokorangi Halfcaste Reserve. From John Andrew, Colyton, enclosing account for tbe supply of material for the Mangaone bridge. From a number of residents of Ashurst and neighbourhood, petitioning Board to grant 5 acres of the Ferry Reserve to Ashurst for a public cemetery. The Engineer, in his report, stated that ho had inspected the ditch on the Bide of Kimbolton road complained of by Mr Little, and found that during heavy rains the ditch overflows. A large area |of ground drains into said ditch. If Mr Pharazyn persists in his request that some of the water shall bo cut off, be recommended that a culvert be put in across the road on the southern boundary of section 23, to which Mr Burrell has given his consent, and the water turned into its original course. He could uot recommend the Board to enlarge the ditch, as there is a fall of about 9 to tlie chain, and if water is confined it would doubtless scour out and became dangerous. With reference to the petition for a cemetery on the Ferry Reserve, the piece of land asked for was, he thought, too near tho river, but if the Board wished to accede to the request thero is a suitable piece of laud above the toll gate on the Reserve. The Corporation laid out a cemetery of 4 acres on section 31 sub. o. at or near the junction of tho Feilding-Ashurst and Watershed roads which has not been vested in anyone so far as he could learn. This is about 34 miles from Ashurst, but is very convenient for a large portion of the district. He recommended that the Board make an application to tho Corporation for it. From Joseph Parson, Waituna Valley, compliaining tbat his section has been open for the last six months ; had been waiting for the Board to do five chains of road forming, but he intended fencing it himself in a month, and that would block the road. From J. H. Hankius, Palmerston N., calling Board's attention to the state of Hcnuingen's Live. From Surveyor-General, stating that Mr W. S. Short, chief clerk of the Land Department had been appointed by the Governor to be a Commissioner under section 113 of the Publio Works Act, 1894, to hold a formal inquiry the matter of the objections raised iv connection with the erection of the Kiwitea bridge. DEPUTATION. Mr Searl, of Ashurst, waited on the Board, on behalf of the residents of that town, with reference to their position praying for a cemetery site. Mr Searl explained that a site had already been gazetted, but it was not suitable, reasons for which he gave, and he urged that the site asked for be granted.— Having been informed that the matter would receive every consideration Mr Searl withdrew. RESOLUTIONS. Proposed by Mr J. H. Booth, seconded by Mr G. Wheeler, That the Engineer be instructed to have Forlong's road opened — Carried. Proposed by Mr A. Conway, seconded by Mr W. G. Conway, That 8 or 9 chains be done on Watershed road where Spur road cuts same, in order to give Messrs Ryan and Conway an outlet. Proposed by Mr A. Conway, seconded by Mr H. J. Booth, That the Board are willing to assist the people of Ashurst and district in obtaining a suitable site for a cemetery if the people in the neighbourhood of said site are agreeable; and no objection raised to the Cemetery Trustees selling the present site and handing money over to the Board. Carried. Resolyed, That the tender of Thomas Young for metalling and trimming Forlong's road at £1 3s 6d per chain be accepted. The Chairman stated that Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge, Purkiss and himself, together with members of the Kiwitea Board, met the Rangitikei County Council at the site of the Onepuhi bridge, and inspected the work which was being gone on with. They were quite satisfied, and thought the protective works would be very effective. Accounts to the amount of £'387 13s (£6 being for Charitable aid) were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
