The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1894. THE CLOSING OF THE SESSION.
To-day, it is expected, will see the conclusion of the longest session of Far liament ever held since New Zealand became a self-governing colony. There can be no question that too much has been attempted in the way of legislation, and very little of any real good has been accomplished. When Parliament was opened, Ministers had the biggest majority of a following on record, yet at the end it dwindled away until it almost had no existence at all, as was shown by the contemptuous manner in which certain of the policy bills of the Government were rejected. The fact is that the members have been day by day awakening to the fact that their constituents will soon expect from them an account of their stewardship, and a clear explanation of their reasons for abandoning the policy they pledged themselves to support at their election — of self reliance and non-borrowing —and which the people sent them to Parliament to carry out.
