V.A.T.C. SPRING MEETING. (PER PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] Melbourne, October 21. There was delightful ™f« *« concluding day's racing of the V.A.T.C. Spring Meeting, among those present Siing Lord Hopetounand party. Messrs Johnson and Cleeson's starting machine was used in the Nursery Handicap and proved an unqualified success. The Caulfield Cup resulted in a great race, and the majority considered that it was a dead heat, Devon heading Paris when aiength past the post. Results :— Maiden Plate, 1 mile -Malachite 1, Dryden 2, The Enchanter 3. Won easily by six lengths. Time, lmin 46£ sec. Nursery Handicap, 4i furlongs Blue Cap 1, Gale 2, Sir George 3. Twenty horses started. A capital race, the judge being unable to seperate Blue Cap and Gale. The owners agreed to divide the stake. Time, 58sec. Caulfield Cup, 1J miles Pans 9st 41b 1, Devon 7st 121 b2, Bruin 7st 121 bB. All the acceptors started by Ruenalf. Betting 100 to 16 Lady Trenton, 100 to 14 Bruin, 100 to 7 Straightfire, Brilliant, and Paris, 100 to 6 Theodore, Foxtail and Chesterman, 100 to 5 Elswick and Isaac, 100 to 4 Havoc, Capstan, and The Possible, 100 to 3 Strahan, Swiveller, Miraculeaux, Tarcoola, Dauphin, Kronberg, Taranaki, Fortunatus, Port Admiral, Selim, Solanum, Leyland, Aeolus, and Pellus. The race resulted in the judge placing Paris first by half a head, Bruin two lengths away third. Then coming in order were Tim Swiveller, Straightfire; Theodore, Lady Trenton, and The Possible, with Leyland last. Time, 2min 38sec. Steeplechase, 2J miles -King Louis 1, Helios 2, Mooroo 3. Nine started. Time, 4min 59£ sec. Windsor Handicap, 6 furlongs—Escapade 1, Upshot 2, Disparity 8. Twentytwo started. Won by a length and a half. Time, lmin 18sec. MARTON HACK RACE MEETING.
