STATE SCHOOL.

TO TIIE EDITOR OF THB STAR. Sir,—Being a bachelor and therefore not so directly interested in the matter as my benedict friends, still I cannot but feel that there must be neglect, indifference or some such fault in the conduct of our educational affairs in Feilding. What I refer to is tbe large number of children that may be seen in our streets during school hours some of these presumably there by the consent of their parents, others again in secluded places evidently afraid to be seen -who are playing truant from the State School. I believe Constable Tuohy was re-appointed, upon the resignation of Mr FlavaU, to the position of Truant Inspector, but I should think that our worthy guardian of the peace has his hands quite fuU enough without having further duties placed upon his shoulders. It seems inscrutable that parents can be so wilfuUyand culpably blind to the future wellbeing of their children as to miss the opportunity of procuring for them, free of aU cost that incalculable benefit, viz: a good useful education. Those who are so blind, should for the sake of their children, be iat once compeUed to send them to the school, the benefits of which their stupid parents are so slow to appreciate. I trust the school committee wiU see their way to do something to alter the present highly unsatisfactory state of matters. I am, etc., Singular.
