October 13 A convention of the Cronin section of the Clan-na-Gael met in Chicago, when it was resolved to have no connection with the constitutional movement for Home Rule, but renews the attempt to cripple England. The Kaffirs raided the outskirts of Lorenzo Marquez during the night and murdered seventeen settlers. The Czar's condition is very serious, his extreme weakness being an alarming feature. Seventy Russians in Vilna have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from four months to ten years for resisting the soldiery in closing a Catholic church. Owing to the brutality exercised by the soldiers, the Courts petitioned the Czar to reduce the sentences in some instances, and in others to grant pardon.
