The Rangitikei Racing Club made a profit of £15 over their recent Spring meeting. Mr Attwood returns thanks to those who attempted to savo his property at the fire this morning. The Feildiug Cricket Club will commence practice in about a fortnight, weather permitting. The vital statistics for the district of Pahnerston for September were — Births 30, deaths 9, marriages 5. Mr J. H. Worsfold has temporarily leased " Glasgow House," opposite the Cash Exchange, and will conduct a boardinghousc in those premises. The Feildiug Debating Society will meet at 7.80 tins evening in Miss Goodbehere's schoolroom. Subject : " Should the totalisator be abolished." Mr J. H. Worsfold returns thanks for the assistance rendered to him on tlio occasion of the destruction by fire of his premises this morning. The first consignment of this season's wool was received at the railway goods shod to-day, the clip coming from Mr C. Pharazyn's Makiuo run. Mr Wooding has leased the shop adjoining Mr E. Martin's Temple of Fashion, and customers may get their watches or jewellery from him there. Mr Alfred Eade returns thanks to the Fire Brigade and the public generally who assisted to prevent the fire this morning extending to his premises. Mr Wilson, M.H.R., is going to propose a motion requesting that the necessary steps be taken to purchase the Manawatu Railway. The Secretary of the Fire Brigade desires to acknowledge receipt of a chequo for £2 2s from Mr W. G. Shearer, as a practical eyidence of his gratitude for the services rendered by the Brigade this morning. The following are the vital statistics for Feilding for the month of September : — Births, 13 ; deaths, 1 ; marriages, 1. Business in the marriage market is dull, but the birth rate is very little below the average. ' The people of Ashurst and district have now a chemist of their own. Mr F. G. Woollams, of Feilding, has opened a branch establishment under the management of his brother, Mr W. Woollams. This is a long felt want supplied. The following are the Palmerston Hospital statistics for the month of September : — Patients in the hospital on Ist September, 28 ; admitted during the month, 18 ; discharged, 18 ; patients in hospital on Ist October, 28. The attention of our readers is directed to a now advertisement which appears in to-day's issue of the Star from Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stains, the well-known and popular drapers of Wellington. Amongst new arrivals of goods the firm have received a largo consignment of "washing drills," the fabric for the season. We (Standard) understand that there is a probability of the annual conference of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servauts being held this year at Palmerston North. The Executive Council have recommended Palmerston as the most central and suitable place for the conference. During the fire this morning there was some lack of williugness on the part of many to -work at the engine, and Captain Eade had to call out for volunteers on several occasions. Numbers did certainly assist at the engine, but the work wa* very heavy and required more men to work at intervals. If a small sum of money were paid for this labor it is certain onlookers would show more alacrity in lending a hand at the pump. A Southern correspondent informs us that as soon after the closing of the session as possible, probably at the beginning of the year when the wool season is over, meetings will be held of the constituencies which returned members pledged to " a non-borrowing and self-reliant policy " in order that the members may have #n opportunity given them of explaining their sudden change of opinions in that connection, Jt is expected that this will be " a hard row to hoe " for one and all. No doubt the northern electors will follow this example. I^aßt evening Mr Byron de Winton gave another of his interesting and instructive lectures "in the Assembly Rooms to a good audience, principally ladies. The attendance was not no large as might have been expected .owing to counter attractions and the unpropitious state of tho weather. He took for his ' subject " Women," proclaiming that in lu"s /Qpjnion the ideal woman was the one wJiq tqok a great interest in her own homo in preference to interfering with the trivial customs And follies of the world. He tpuched the subject in a gentlemanly and masterly manner, and was listened to with marked attention. He announced that this evening he would lecture ou a political topic, "The downfall of Go.vernments," touching cm tljo present New Zealand Government. With refer ence to Mr Do Wintou's herbal remedies wo might mention that several instances have been brought before our notice where relief, if not absolute cure, has t>eea afforded to patients treated by
Mr Wilson, M.H.R., is to ask the Minister for Lands to make enquiries during the recess with a view to bringing in a Bill relating to the burning of bush. The Premier made an exceptionally good speech on the Native Land question in the House on Friday night. Captain Russell warmly congratulated him upon it. On Tuesday next there will be a concert and lecture in the Assembly Rooms under the auspices of the Feilding Public Library. Mr De Winton will be the organiser, who will also deliver the lecture. Mr W. G. Shearer, in our advertising columns, returns his sincere thanks to the Fire Brigade, and others, who so willingly and successfully assisted to save his property when endangered by the fire this morning. The proceedings of the Volunteer officers' conference were kept absolutely secret because had they been divulged advantage would have been taken by the foreign powers, Russia, Japan and France, in the trouble now obtaining in tbe lands washed — or partly so — by the Pacific. A meeting will be held in the schoolhouse, Campbelltown, to-morrow evening, at 7 o'clock, in order that matters in connection with the proposed erection of au Anglican Church in that eistrict may be discussed. All who are in any way interested iv this object are invited to be present at the meeting. At a meeting of the Feilding Harmonic Society's Committee, held last night, it was resolved to hold future practices in the Foresters' Hall, and as Mr Meadows has left the district Mr Greenwood was elected conductor pro. tern. Mr Greenwood has proved himself a very efficient conductor, and it is to be hoped he will see his way clear to continue his services in such a prominent position in the Society. There was a very fair attendance at tho Temperance Hall last eyening, when tbe Rev. P. R. Munro, of Rangiora, delivered another interesting address on Prohibition. The speaker dealt for some time with the Licensing Bill now before the House, the beginning of prohibition, and the steady work which Is being carried on by those interested in the cause. The Temperance choir was present, and during the evening contributed several musical items. Although opinions differ regnrdiDg some of tbe methods of the Salvation Arm}', all agree that it has done much in the intoreets of suffering humnmty iv the establishment of rescue himos, &c. Iv Wellington a great deal has been dono in this direction, and next month a new Home will beopened expressly for women It is to be known as Pauline House, and occupies a site in Cuba street a little above the branch of the National Bank. The section on which it stands was presented to the Army by one of the stuff officero, Miss Paul, and the building hai been put up ulmost entirely by day labor under the supervision of the officers of the Army. — Post
