Mr H. J. Hayns, engineer, reported : — The roads generally are in fairly good order, considering the large amount of rain during the month. Slips continue to come down on most of the sidling road, and are a source of expense. The contractors in all parts of the district have had a trying month, and very little progress has been made on their several contracts. According to your instructions I went to Wellington and interviewed Mr F. Pirani, M.H.R., in connection with the election of Councillors for the Pohangiua County. He stated the election should be about the 18th of October, and the first meeting of the Councillors on the 19th October, but that will be decided when the proclamation is drawn up. I also went to the Land Board office and had the questions of thirds payable to local bodies explained to me. When a settler capitalises a perpetual lease section the local body receives equal to a third of the rent for 15 years. If it is deferred payment section a third of the purchase money is paid to the local body. The outstanding rates at the present time amount to £633 8s sd, and the amount collected since last meeting is £103 0s 9d. Accounts to the amount of £264 were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.— StandarcL^^^^
