The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, SEPT. 29, 1894. BOROUGH RATES.
♦ ■ — The Borough Council are acting wisely in calling in the rates for the current year. The overdraft at the Bank has been pushed to ics limit, there is much money to be paid for maintenance of roads and other work, and nothing to pay it with. Under these circumstances the ratepayers cannot feel aggrieved that they have been given peremptory notice to pay their dues. But, on the other hand, it hai been pointed out to us that the notice is somewhat abrupt and that more days of grace should have been given. Of course there are always two sides tj a question, and no doubt owing to the extreme dulness of trade, the scarcity of work, with the consequent tightness of money, some inconvenience may be felt in individual cases, but notwithstanding that the municipal work must go on, and the burgeeRes have to provide the sinews of war. Every day on which rates are unpaid means a loss in bank interest to the Borough.
